Cutting ties with family members is never an easy decision, but sometimes it becomes the only reasonable thing to do. I want to share a story with you, a story of a traumatizing experience that no one could have prepared me for.
It started like any other day. I was at the office, trying to find some missing files, when my phone began to ring. It was my eight-year-old son Luke, who was supposed to be at school at the time. Looking at my phone, I noticed that he had called me 10 times before, and in that moment, I knew something was very wrong.
Filled with worry, I hurried to call him back, and my heart sank when I heard him say, “Daddy, please come home! Mom is crying…”
“Slow down, buddy. What’s happening?” I asked, trying to remain calm.
“Daddy, I don’t know what to do. I just came home and now I hear mom crying in her room!”
“Why didn’t you go into her room?” I questioned.
“I’m too scared to go inside. I hear other voices in there!”
“Okay, okay! Stay in your room. Lock the door! I’ll call your mom,” I reassured him, desperately trying not to panic.
